JETT LIKELY DIED FROM A BEATING - Authorities Are Investigating

(01/07/2003)
A Clendenin man was not shot, but was likely beaten, resulting in in his death. The body of Sam Jett, who may be in his 80's, was found in a remote area of Roane County near Amma Saturday afternoon.

The man reportedly had a wound in the front of his head and a wound on his back, likely from a object used in a beating.

Medical Examiner Don Smith said "A body has been found in the Pigeon area and has been sent to the Medical Examiner's office in Charleston for identification and cause of death."

The man's body was found a few feet from a car which was stuck on Sugar Run Road, not far from the Kanawha County line. His wallet was reportedly missing.

The stuck car in which Jett was either driving or was a passenger was damaged from behind, possibly rammed. The interior of the vehicle was blood-stained. "There was blood everywhere," a witness said. Jett was resident of a trailer park in the Clendenin area.

He had been "clutching some kind of billy club," the witness said.

A source at the scene said Jett may have been in conflict at a previous location, although authorities would not confirm the information.

A passerby saw the Jett vehicle along the country road about 5 a.m. Saturday, but did not see the body.

Roane County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jeff Smith, emergency medical services and the Newton Volunteer Fire Department responded to what appeared to be a car accident about 1 p.m. Saturday, with a report of "a man laying beside his vehicle."

The Sheriff's department is looking for a car which was in the area Friday night.

The State Police mobile crime lab was summoned to the scene, and authorities were investigating into Saturday night.

This was the second violent death in Roane County within a week.

A Spencer man was killed on December 28th with multiple blunt force trauma to his head, in what is a highly suspicious death. The body of John Moorehead, 68, was discovered in his burning mobile home on Arnoldsburg Road by the Spencer-Roane Volunteer Fire Department. An autopsy said he did not die from the fire.

Family sources say Moorehead was likely murdered.

Another Roane County man, Judson Reid, was murdered a few months ago and a Tariff man, Vince Golosow has been charged.
