| NWS Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the entire state of West Virginia and parts of Ohio and Kentucky beginning at 2 a.m. Monday as a wintry mix of snow and sleet is expected to move into the area.
The winter weather advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sleet, freezing rain and snow could make for a treacherous morning commute after the area has seen 13 consecutive days at or below freezing, including record-breaking lows. Overnight Saturday, Elkins dropped to 14 below zero and Parkersburg dropped to 7 below.
This system is expected to reach the eastern counties of Ohio and Kentucky at about 5 a.m. and enter western West Virginia at about 6 a.m. The Kanawha Valley can expect to see this wintry mix beginning at about 7 a.m.
Mountain counties east of Route 19 will see mostly snow and could get 3 to 5 inches.
The wintry mix will transition to all rain during the midday hours on Monday with warming temps.
Later in the week, most of the area will see unseasonably warm temperatures and heavy rain which could cause rock slides as the ground thaws.
