| Bert O. Simmons, 97, of Millwood, West Virginia, formerly of Tariff, Roane County, departed this life January 1, 2003, in the Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood, following an extended illness.
He was born December 12, 1905, in Canoe, Roane County, a son of the late James Franklin and Alta Ferrell Simmons.
He was a retired drilling contractor for gas wells in Kentucky and Virginia and moved to Millwood in 1973. He was a faithful member of the West Ripley Baptist Church and served as usher and greeter.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Freda V. Bailey Simmons and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his children, James Bailey Simmons and Larry Bert Simmons; brother, Walter Simmons; sisters, Marjorie Epling, Vivian Silvole, Sue Stewart.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 4, at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, with the Rev. Dean Risser and the Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Tariff Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
