92-year-old Denver Roberts of Grantsville, a native of Hur died, his remains being donated to the WV Gift Registery.
I think of Denver at every Calhoun High alumni gathering since,
who was a speaker representing his 1943 class. "After 60 years, I finally made it to the head of the class...You could spot the teachers. They dressed better than the janitors," he said. Roberts kept the alumni laughing for twenty minutes.
It was undoubtedly the most entertaining talk before such a gathering, ever.
Denver's talk was recorded and he gave me a manuscript of it before he passed.
The Roberts clan sprung from Hur backwoods Buckhorn Hollow
Denver had a deep history in his family and Calhoun County, and one of the finest men, talented, amiable, dedicated, engaged and caring, serving in World War II with the US Navy, as a gunner and in the military police.
He was proud of his roots deep in Buckhorn Hollow, the son of James and Malinda Roberts, one of eight children.
It was a privilege to tromp around his old homestead and the backwoods of Hur over the years, enjoying his vibrant personality.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.
