The Roane County Commissioners named interim-Sheriff Todd Cole to the position permanently, according to commissioner Melissa O'Brien, saying that Cole will bring stability to the office.
Six people were under consideration for the post after sheriff-elect Bo Williams resigned.
Cole had been the sheriff until the end of 2016.
Sheriff-elect Williams resigned in January, the same day he pleaded guilty to a charge of entering but not breaking.
Williams faces up to 10 years in prison. The charges stem from Williams being accused of taking meth evidence from the Spencer Police Department where he worked as an officer. He admitted to having a problem using the drug.
Some criminal cases Williams was a part of have been dismissed.
Kevin Unger was appointed chief deputy after a request from Cole.
