A Calhoun native and well-known pastor Dr. John Telford Powell has passed in Wadsworth, Ohio at the age of 80.

Raised at Sand Ridge, he was a graduate of Calhoun County High School.

He was the pastor of the Reimer Road Baptist Church for 35 years, but often returned to Calhoun to preach and support ministries.

Pastor Powell began his ministry in 1963 after finishing his education at the Akron Bible Institute.

With a small congregation he watched it grow into a thriving church that included a vibrant bus ministry, Christian school, and senior citizen program.

After retiring in 1998, he went back to further his education and completed his degree at Marietta Bible College. During his retirement he devoted much of his time towards the missions program he started which was directed towards the Appalachian Region because it had a special place in his heart.

His final years he enjoyed the simpler things like guest speaking and visiting with his friends.

He will be most remembered for his many acts of kindness towards those in need and his passion to share his faith in Christ. Calling hours will be Friday, Dec. 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Reimer Road Baptist Church. Funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 17th at 11 a.m. at Reimer Road Baptist Church, Dr. Jim Newton will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Marietta Bible College.
