The USDA, while declaring most of the states surrounding West Virginia as drought areas, has failed to
take action on the Mountain State.
Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglas said Farm Service Agency
surveys show that 50 of West Virginia's 55 counties meet qualifications for
drought disaster status.
West Virginia officials are frustrated because they have not heard from the federal agency.
West Virginia's conditions are a result of a dry spell in late August
and early September. The hardest hit areas seem to be in
north central areas of the state, from Clarksburg to Parkersburg.
Hardest hit has been hay.
Agriculture officials are still hoping to get the disaster declaration so
farmers can apply for federal assistance.
