Melvin Stewart Filkins, 77, of Chloe, West Virginia, departed this life at 1:20 PM; Sunday May 1, 2016 at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, West Virginia following an extended illness.
Born May 4, 1938 in Savanah, New York, Melvin was the son of the late Alvin and Grace Card Filkins.
Melvin was a Superintendent for the Departments of Highways in New York State with 30 plus years experience. He was a graduate of Port Byron Central High School in New York, class of 1956. Melvin was a veteran of the United States Army, and loved to spend time with his family. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, faming and woodworking.
On August 29, 1958, he was united in marriage to Teresa Keaton Filkins, who survives at their home in Chloe.
Surviving are 5 children, Rodney S. Filkins and companion Maggie Lawton of Port Byron, NY; Teresa N. Dempsey and husband Edward of Auburn, NY; Pamela L. La-Seigna and husband Mision of Seneca Falls, NY; Rhonda S. Lofft and husband Kenneth of Auburn, NY; and Paulette Y. Jones and husband Daniel of Port Byron, NY; 3 siblings, Norman G. Filkins of Wichita Falls, TX; Marion Hickey of Port Bryon, NY; and Helen Knapp of Weedsport, NY.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Christopher La-Seigna, Jason Lofft, Rachel La-Seigna, Scott Lofft, Rhonda Lofft, Sean La-Seigna, Daniella Clemons, DeVon Dempsey, Olivia Jones, Jamie Lofft and Keith Clemons, and 3 great-grandchildren, Chance Lofft, Brianna VanAuken, and Hadley, VanAuken.
Along with his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by 2 siblings, Robert Filkins and Loise Jane Filkins.
Melvin's request for cremation has been honored and the family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
