Edwin Gainer, 77, Kansas City, Kansas, passed away April 27, 2016 at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Ed was born January 1, 1939 in White Pines, West Virginia to Alfonso and Opal Gainer. He attended school at Tanner West Virginia. In 1958 he and his family moved to Kansas where he met the Love of his Life, Carlene Stambaugh. They were united in marriage on September 30, 1960. They became the parents of one son, Kenneth Gainer.
Ed was a trader for 10 years in DeQueen, Arkansas. In 1986 Ed, Carlene and Kenny returned to Lane, Kansas to care for Ed's parents. They lived in Lane over 10 years making many lifetime friends. In 1996 they moved to Kansas City, Kansas due to Ed's health.
Ed served in the U. S. Army and is a member of the Masons. Ed enjoyed gardening, tinkering in his garage, and woodworking. He loved having and going to garage sales. He made friends everywhere he went. He loved telling jokes and having fun with children of all ages. Ed was a kid at heart.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Burl Bland, Vurl Bland and Jack Gainer; and sister Joan Hughes.
He is survived by his wife Carlene of the home; son Kenneth Gainer (Jamie) of Alexandria, IN; grandchildren Megan Gainer (Paul Orth) of Alexandria, IN, and Jack Gainer and Cassie Gainer of Alexandria, IN; sister Leila Morgan of St. Charles, MO; brother Alfonso "Junior" Gainer of Centerville, KS; many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Funeral service is 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS. Visitation is 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment is in Quaker Cemetery, Lane, KS with military honors.
