Dylan Heiney and Dakota Jarvis combined for 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to lead visiting Calhoun to a 61-50 victory over Braxton County Friday night.
Overall, the Red Devils shot 20 of 22 free throws in that quarter to lift their record to 11-8 assuring a winning season, the first since the 2003-04 team that advanced to the state tournament.
The Red Dervils, once again, started slow but by halftime they had grabbed a lead they would never relinquish although the Eagles, 6-14, did knot things up in the third quarter.
But after that the Red Devils jumped back on top and slowly pulled away the rest of the way.
Heiney led Calhoun with 22 points while Zack Yanero added 14 and Ethyn Miller 12. Jarvis chipped in with eight and Austin Gribble had five to round out the scoring. Soney Wilson, Ben Frederick, Nick Murphy, Trevor Carder and Hayden Richards all played but did not score.
Yanero led the Red Devils on the boards with 10 rebounds while Miller had five assists and four steals. Heiney also had four steals.
For Braxton Cole Browning led the way with 16 while Tayvon Stout added 13. Brett McMillion scored eight, Heath Cottrill five, Seth Arnold four and Garrett Shingler and Payton Lockard had two apiece to round out the scoring.
Calhoun also won the junior varsity game by a 57-44 count as Wilson scored a season-high 31.
He was backed by Carder with 14, Murphy with five (and 12 rebounds), Richards with four and John Long with three. Frederick, Levi Gregory, Noah Allen and David Marks all played but did not score.
Braxton was led by Danny Hacker with 19 while Lockard added 15. Blake Withrow had nine and Caleb Sims two to round out the scoring.
Calhoun returns to action Tuesday night at home. It is Senior Night for the Red Devils and seniors Miller, Gribble and Jarvis will be honored.
