Madalene Stewart Gandee, 92

Madalene Stewart Gandee went home to be with the Lord January 9, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Garfield "Pete" Stewart and the late Lillie Mullins Stewart Holcomb.

She was born in Nicholas County April 30, 1923. Madalene was a former employee of the Spencer State Hospital and Staats Pharmacy. She was also a foster mother to 18 foster children.

She was the oldest member of the Faith Baptist Church on Arnoldsburg Road, former member of the American Legion Auxiliary; Wetzel Chapter No. 27 Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Roane County Republican Women's Club and was named Outstanding Republican Woman in 2001. She was also a member of the Miletree Nursing Home Auxiliary and Roane General Hospital Auxiliary.

She was very active in collecting donations and pledges for the construction of Roane General Hospital. She was also a member of the Reedy Senior Citizens. She was an avid quilter and loved to crochet and her dishtowels were treasures to those that received them. She was also a former Sunday school teacher and never failed to witness her faith to others with her testimony of how her pet pig pointed her to salvation.

Madalene was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Dewey Brooks Gandee on November 10, 1998; her brothers, Alva Stewart, Eugene Stewart and Paul Holcomb; sisters, Minnerva Stewart, Wanda Stewart Henderson and Nina May Holcomb; stepmother, Madalene Stewart; stepfather, Freeman Holcomb.

Survivors include her sons, Jack (Millie) Foster of Waters, Okla., Brooks Dale (Fay) Gandee of Gay, W.Va.; daughters, Sheila Foster Smith of Fla., Edith (Terry) Foster Cutlip of Fla. and Charlotte (Stormy) Stalnaker of Spencer; brothers, John Holcomb of N.C., Tom Stewart of Summersville and Gene Stewart of Johnsonville, Tenn.; sisters, Wanda Stewart Shaw of Chandler, Okla., Amilee Holcomb Long, Sherry Holcomb Brown and Lois Stewart McCleery. Additional survivors include many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 12 at the Faith Baptist Church, Spencer, with Bro. Bill Walton and Pastor Justin S. Simmons officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to her beloved Faith Baptist Church, 237 Arnoldsburg Road, Spencer, WV 25276.
