West Virginia's four-year high school graduation rate for last school year was 86.5 percent, a 2-percentage-point increase over the previous school year, according to data the state Department of Education released Wednesday.
The Mountain State's graduation rate has increased from 76.4 percent about five years ago, according to a department press release. The release said several initiatives have contributed to the improvement, including the creation of the state's Early Warning System, which tracks 45 different indicators to identify students who're at risk of dropping out. The most important indicators are attendance, behavior and grades.
"We've placed a focus on identifying which individual students are at risk of dropping out and empowering our schools and counties to provide interventions to those students," State Schools Superintendent Michael Martirano said in the release.
