West Virginia hunters have bagged more than 70,000 deer during the first week of gun buck season and are keeping pace so far with the number of deer killed in 2013.
Calhoun hunters killed 1,049 bucks, 287 anterless deer.
"For the first week of gun buck and antlerless, we are mirroring the first week of 2013," said Randy Tucker, an analyst for the state Division of Natural Resources.
Preliminary numbers for the first week of the 2015 gun buck season - Nov. 23 through Nov. 29 - show hunters killed a total of 70,396 deer -- 56,463 bucks and 13,933 anterless deer. In 2013, the first week total was 75,341 -- 49,849 bucks and 25,492 anterless.
DNR officials are hopeful about the numbers since 2014 there was a 50,000 total drop in the number of deer killed in all hunting seasons compared to 2013.
In 2014, hunters killed only 51,687 total deer during the first week of gun buck season -- 33,294 bucks and 18,393 anterless deer.
In 2015, the top three counties for buck kills for the first week of gun buck season were Ritchie, 2,025; Preston, 1,929; and Jackson, 1,809. Meanwhile, the top three counties for antlerless deer kills were Ritchie, 665; Mason, 639; and Lewis, 592.

* Kanawha: 1,295, bucks, 162 anterless
* Putnam: 1,083 bucks, 249 anterless
* Cabell: 562 bucks, 152 anterless
* Lincoln: 1,134 bucks, 307 anterless
* Boone: 726 bucks, no gun antlerless season
* Jackson: 1,809 bucks, 521 anterless
* Wayne: 789 bucks, no gun antlerless
* Nicholas: 1,115 bucks, 95 anterless
* Clay: 524 bucks, 53 anterless
* Braxton: 1,570 bucks, 437 anterless
* Roane: 1,780 bucks, 481 anterless
* Calhoun: 1,049 bucks, 287 anterless
