BUSINESS OWNER SHOOTS WOULD BE ROBBER - Kanawha County deputies are investigating after a business owner shot a suspect who was allegedly trying to break into cars near his business.
Deputies said a woman called 911 saying her husband had shot someone near Bigley Auto, just North of Charleston during the late hours of Friday night, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Justin Hardman, of Charleston told them his business had recently been subject to vandalism and theft, so he stayed overnight to keep an eye on his property.
At about 11:15 p.m., he saw a man tampering with cars outside his building, the release said.
Hardman went to confront the man and initially chased the man, but the suspect turned around and had what appeared to be a tire iron or another large tool in his hand, deputies said.
Hardman then shot at the man with a pistol.
Hardman told deputies he believed a bullet struck the man, but the man continued to flee. Hardman's wife then dialed 911, the release said.
While searching the area where the suspect fled, one detective found a disturbed area on the ground near the riverbank, the release said.
There was blood on the leaves and debris in that spot. The Charleston Fire Department was asked to respond with their boat and help search the riverbank. Detectives and others searched culverts, drains, wooded areas, and the riverbank while firefighters assisted searching with the boat.
Early Saturday morning, a "suspicious person" was reported to Metro 911 in a neighborhood about one mile up-river from the shooting.
Deputies responded and located Daniel Knight, 31 of Campbells Creek. Deputies said Knight was bleeding from a gunshot wound to his butt.
A Charleston Fire Department ambulance transported him to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division for treatment.
Deputies have confirmed that Knight was the man who Hardman shot. So far, no one has been charged in the case.
