Two fire departments respond to Pink Road fire

AVFD Fire Chief Bill Jones (left) of burning house

A house occupied by William and Deronda Cottrell on Pink Road, one-tenth mile from U. S. 33-119 at the Calhoun-Roane line, was completely destroyed by fire Thursday morning. "I was taking a nap, when our six-year-old daughter woke me up, saying the house was on fire," said Mrs. Cottrell. "It caught from the wood stove, around the pipe."

"It was a really old house," said Mrs. Cottrell.

She said her husband tried to pour water around the smoke stack, but it quickly spread and was fully involved, "almost on the ground" when the Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department arrived after the 11:30 a.m. call.

Fire started around burning stove pipe

Firemen returned on rekindle late Wednesday afternoon

"We have nothing left. Nothing," she said last night. She and her husband had lived in the house, known as the Butler place, about five months.

The Upper West Fork VFD also responded to the call. Both departments returned to the scene in late afternoon when the structure rekindled.

There were no injuries.
