The closed Normantown High/Elementary School
building subject of controversy

The Gilmer County Free Press blog reported this week that the West Virginia Department of Education is keeping the intended torching of Normantown School secret, the original high school building, which has been closed. The building has adjacent modular, elementary classrooms.

The Free Press article says, "Within past weeks a serious crime attempt was committed at Normantown. The old brick school was entered and elaborate preparations were made to burn it down. Based on reports from well placed sources, the perpetrator(s) used an elaborate wicking system to go from the ground floor to locations throughout the building so a match could start a fast moving flash fire."

Gilmer County Superintendent of Schools Gabriel J. Devono says, "The Gilmer Free Press has chosen to publish what appears to be rumor, instead of actually contacting me, Gilmer County Schools' administration, the Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department, or the State Fire Marshall, to learn what did occur at Normantown Elementary School."

Devono has scheduled a public meeting for parents and concerned citizens regarding the matter at Normantown Elementary School on September 10, 2015, at 4:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.
