STARCHER INJURED IN HUNTING ACCIDENT - Air-Lifted To CAMC, Condition Described As Serious

(11/26/2002)
A 60-year-old Calhoun man was seriously injured in a four-wheeler accident Monday. Gary "Cook" Starcher, who lives near the Calhoun-Roane county line at the head of Sam's Run, was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center about 1 p.m. by HealthNet chopper.

Starcher's wife said he had shot a six-point buck and was going back to get it on a four-wheeler when he wrecked. Starcher's brother, Melvin, and Curt Helmick went in search of the man when he did not return, finding him against a steep hillside.

Helmick said he became unconscious, with apparent head and internal injuries. "We called 911. The ambulance crew arrived quickly," he said.

Calhoun EMS responded with the Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Department, bringing Starcher out in a 4x4 ambulance to the Upper West Fork Park, where he was air-lifted.

It was the area's first hunting accident.
