A Greatest Generation World War II veteran with his roots in Calhoun has has at age 93.
Russell Metz died on August 10, 2015 in Akron OH.
Born August 22, 1922 in Calhoun County, W. Va.,
he was preceded in death by parents, William and
Losie (Cottrell) Metz; brother, Bert Metz; and
sisters, Opal Bartley and Thelma Yarger.
He is survived by wife of 68 years, Becky; sons,
Jim (Sue), Jack (Rochelle); daughter, Sandy (Dan)
Wowra; sisters, Etta (Junior) Collins, Elva Jane
Filkins; five grandchildren, Missy, Nikki,
Kristi, Shelly, Danny; 14 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild.
His name lives on with five family members
having Russell as their first or middle name.
Metz enlisted in the Army before World War II
started and was discharged in September 1945 with
the rank of Staff Sergeant. He settled in Akron
after the war, where he met and married his wife.
Metz learned welding under the GI Bill and used
this trade as a welder and fitter for 30 years at
Babcock and Wilcox Co. in Barberton.
He was there to help over the years,
whether it was practicing or coaching Little
League or repairing or building around the house,
seemed he could fix anything with almost nothing
to work with.
He was an avid outdoorsman. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing, and teaching others
these skills.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday,
August 18, 2015 at Cox Funeral Home, 222 Norton
Ave., Barberton, OH 44203. An hour of calling
prior from 9 a.m. until time of service. Family
will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August
17, 2015 at Cox Funeral Home.
