LONGTIME EXECUTIVE SECONDARY SCHOOLS ACTIVITIES COMMISSION DEAD AT 94 - Sam Williams Of Elizabeth

The longtime Executive Secretary of West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission, Sam Williams of Elizabeth has died at 94.

Williams attended Wirt High School and graduated in 1938, earning a a degree from Glenville State College, graduating in 1946 and then received at Masters Degree from WVU in 1950.

Williams joined the Air Force in 1942 and was part of the China Defensive in Central Burma, as an armed gunner. During his time in the service, Sam received the WW II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, A-P Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. Sam left the military 1945.

During his life he was the Principal of Wirt High School for ten years, Executive Head of the School District of New Matamoras for two years and was Principal of St Marys High for five years.

During this time Sam was also an active football official for both high school and college. He was ranked one of the top football officials in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.

A golfer, he was also a diehard sports fan, an inductee of the class of 2000 Mid Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame. He was a 32nd degree Mason at Wirt Lodge #82 and a member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2015, at the Matheny Whited Funeral Home in Elizabeth, with the Rev. Lee Williams officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be at K of P Cemetery, in Elizabeth, W.Va. Read complete obituary   Sam Williams
