James Paul Siegrist, 90, of Creston, WV died peacefully at his home, on July 13, 2015.
He was born in Clarksburg, WV on December 21, 1924, a son of the late Harry Oscar and Mahalia Gay Woofter Siegrist.
He graduated from Weston High School where he was active in school sports and band. He joined the Army Air Force during WWII right out of high school. He was an engineer and gunner on B-24s while stationed in Italy; bombing into Germany with the 15th Bomber Wing.
After the war, he attended Glenville State College, and played football and basketball. This is where he met his wife Jewell V. Cain. They were married August 29, 1948.
He finished his degree at Concord College. He was a teacher and coach at Pearisburg High School, Pearisburg, VA. He was a chemist and chemical engineer for a few years and then moved back to Calhoun County and worked at Rubber Fabricators.
He went back into teaching, taught at Morristown Elementary, and got into school administration. He then was Superintendent at Ritchie County and Calhoun County. He later stepped down and finished out his years as a biology and conservation teacher at Calhoun County High School.
He retired in 1986 to their farm at Annamoriah Flats, where he was an avid gardener and enjoyed the outdoors.
He was active in several different youth groups over the years; Boy Scouts and church youth groups. He coached Brooksville Youth Basketball for several years. He was a member of the WV Silver Haired Legislature for a few years. He attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and Snyder Chapel, as well as others over his lifetime.
He was very active in soil conservation throughout his life. He was awarded the State Soil Conservation Teacher several times and was the North East US SC Teacher of the Year. He was on the Little Kanawha Soil Conservation Board for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Jewell Siegrist; four children, Gary, Ron, Glen, and Paula Jean; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are six siblings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. Interment will be in McCray Cemetery at Creston.
In lieu of flowers, the Siegrist family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice, in remembrance of Mr. Siegrist.
