ATV TAXATION MAY BE STEPPED UP - Stickers Would Indicate Compliance, Raising $10 Million For Highways

(11/16/2002)
At least 25 deaths in West Virginia linked to ATV accidents this year has caused some focus toward safety regulations for the recreational vehicles. West Virginia has no regulations attached to ATV operation, except they cannot be operated on the interstate highways. Some town's have passed laws prohibiting them on streets.

Now the focus has shifted to taxation.

Taxing the vehicles has raised interest in Charleston, a plan that would raise $10 million for the state highway fund.

There is currently no way of enforcing tax laws on ATV's, but that would change if the legislature adopts a plan to pay the tax, obtain a title and get a sticker.

Affixing the sticker to the vehicle at time of purchase would indicate the vehicle is in compliance.
