CALHOUN COMMISSION WORRIED ABOUT SHERIFF'S CO. BUDGET REPORTS - Calhoun 911 Suspends Wrecker Services From Rotation

(06/10/2015)
Calhoun Commission president Chip Westfall expressed concerns at Monday's meeting regarding Calhoun Sheriff Carl Ballengee's office not providing required monthly financial statements.

"This has become a serious problem for commissioners managing the budget," Westfall said.

Commissioner Kevin Helmick said he has expressed verbal concern to Sheriff Ballengee and his office for nearly nine months, saying the office has been saying the problem has been related to a new computer system.

President Westfall said, "We will be consulting with the prosecuting attorney about what to do," indicating a letter regarding the matter is being sent to the sheriff.

"With the new fiscal year approaching, it really is putting us in a bind," said Helmick.

During Monday's meeting, local businessman Tom Ullum spoke to the commission about courthouse hours, and that the courthouse should be open 8-5 p.m.

Ullum was advised to put his concerns in writing, with his fact-finding, and submit it to the commission.

The commission advised Ullum, who operates a towing company, that the WV Public Service Commission has advised Calhoun 911 that his company is not in good standing, according to Robert K. Morris, with the Carrier Division.

The PSC said Ullum's company (Furr's Auto) had been revoked in Nov. 2013 for failure to provide annual reports.

The PSC also advised the county that U & S Trucking, a company operated by Ullum's brother Dick, is also not in good standing, having failed "to make wreckers available for inspection in spite of repeated requests."

The commissioners expressed concern regarding towing services in the county, with Jeremy Westfall's towing service reportedly operating only part-time.

Calhoun 911 Director Kathy Wood said the two services operated by the Ullums would be taken off 911 rotation because of liability issues, until the problems are resolved, and would be using Westfall's service, when available, and out-of-county providers.
