Calhoun County Community Resources, Inc. Plans to bring up to 400 teenagers and adults to Calhoun County to improve the
homes of local residents. Elderly, handicapped and lower-income residents are to get home repairs.
As many as 70 local residents will benefit from the work of a projected 400 adult and teenage volunteers at the 2003 Calhoun
County Group Work Camp, coming to Calhoun County during June 2003. The work camp will provide free home repairs
through the Group Workcamp program, sponsored locally by Calhoun County CRI.
The Group Workcamps Foundation is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian volunteer home repair organization
head-quartered in Loveland Colorado. This summer an anticipated 28,800 young people and adults will participate in 72
Group Workcamps in communities across the United states and Canada.
At each work camp, about 300-500 teenagers and adults, all members of church youth groups, volunteer a week of their time
to repair 60-70 homes throughout the community. "This represents about 12,000 hours of volunteer labor, worth at least
$80,000 to the community," said PJ Moore, County Director of Calhoun County CRI.
"These really are remarkable young people," said Joel Fay, vice-president of Group Workcamps. "Each one is actually paying
for the privilege of working in your community. Workcamp registration fees are used to cover our costs for food, insurance
and building materials."
The work camp will be housed at Calhoun Middle-High School, with work campers sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the
cafeteria and enjoying evening programs in the gym. "This service to our community would be impossible without the
wonderful cooperation of the Calhoun County Board of Education," remarked PJ Moore.
