WVU Extension's West Central Master Gardener Association President Cathy Flashman (above left) presents Roane County's Eve Southall with the Master Gardener of the Year award during the association's May monthly meeting.
Each of the 36 WVU Extension Master Gardeners Associations select one gardener to honor each year during the State Conference for their outstanding service to the community.
The Master Gardener program and training are conducted by the West Virginia University Extension Service through the county extension offices.
The training provides gardeners with the opportunity to improve their horticultural knowledge and skills and to then share their expertise with the public through organized volunteer activities. The program topics covered include: botany, plant problem diagnosis, soils, ornamentals, pest management, fruits, vegetables, and plant propagation.
