Wanda Carol Cooper, 81, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Monday, April 20, 2015 at Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg following a short illness.
She was born December 11, 1933 in Charleston, the daughter of the late Sigel E. and Margaret Wilt Taylor, formerly of Spencer. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Spencer where she once served as Sunday school superintendent, youth leader and was a member of the Susannah Wesley Circle.
She was a 1951 graduate of Spencer High School and was the salutatorian of her class. She was selected for all-state band multiple times and was also a majorette.
She received a bachelor's degree from Glenville State College in 1954, where she was a member of the college newspaper's staff and selected as a fraternity queen. She also worked as a model while in college.
She taught at schools in Sissonville and Parkersburg and also was an accountant for Charles Lewis in Spencer.
She was an English teacher at Spencer High School, and later librarian, from 1966 until she chose early retirement in 1989. During her time on the faculty she served as prom sponsor for several years and sponsored the Spiriteers club. She was also a Brownie troop leader.
After retirement, she was a member of the Roane County Community Band and served as secretary for the Spencer High School Alumni Association, creating many historic photo collages that are displayed in the former school's alumni room and at the Spencer Municipal Building.
Her many interests included music, knitting, collecting antique glassware, genealogy, her flower garden and her cats.
She is survived by her husband, Steven L. Cooper of Spencer; son, Jim Cooper and his wife, Sandy, of Spencer; daughter, Anita Wood and her husband, Sam, also of Spencer; brothers, Richard and his wife, Carolyn, of Spencer and Kermit and his wife, Barbara, of Severn MD; grandchildren, Dr. Justin Cooper and his wife, Desarae, of Lexington KY, A.J. Cooper and his wife, Amanda, of Ripley WV, Abigail Harden of Morgantown WV and Jonathan Harden of Fairmont WV; great granddaughter, Audrey Joyce Cooper of Ripley; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with her grandson, Evangelist Justin Cooper, officiating. Burial will follow at Eventide Cemetery in Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Roane County Committee on Aging, Community Care Division, 811 Madison Avenue, Spencer, WV 25276.
