WV Senator Joe Manchin is being blasted by the NRA gun lobby for his failure to support the elimination of concealed weapons permits in West Virginia.
Manchin has been criticizing the National Rifle Association, saying it has moved from promoting hunting and gun safety toward a culture "big business."
Manchin says there wasn't any public outcry for the concealed weapons change, which would eliminate required safety training and background checks.
The Republican-led WV Legislature cleared the bill, with Democratic support and was vetoed by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.
Tomblin vetoed the measure, citing public safety concerns and law-enforcement community opposition.
Manchin had earlier butted heads with the NRA over a failed federal bill to expand background checks.
Manchin had previously earned A ratings with the NRA.
The WV Legislature has introduced more than 30 bills expanding gun rights in WV.
The NRA, once an association for sportsmen, has become the prime promoters of assault weaponry. It once prided itself as a grassroots organization not tied to corporate influence.
The bulk of the group's money now comes in the form of contributions, grants, royalty income, and advertising, much of it originating from gun industry sources.
The gun industry and its corporate allies have often given between $20 million and $50 million to the NRA.
Donors include firearm companies like Midway USA, Springfield Armory Inc, Pierce Bullet Seal Target Systems, and Beretta USA Corporation. Other supporters from the gun industry include Cabala's, Sturm Rugar & Co, and Smith & Wesson.
The NRA has taken an active role in distributing millions of dollars to candidates that support the gun lobby.
