CALHOUN SCHOOL BOARD ENGAGING IN ALL-DAY TRAINING TODAY - Board Expected To Vote Monday On Superintendent's Restructuring Plan

(02/13/2015)
The Calhoun County school board will have a full day of training today at the Glenville Inn starting at 9.a.m.

The training and work session comes in the middle of facing budget reductions and a proposed restructuring of the board office's administrative staff by Supt. Tim Woodward.

The cuts and restructuring come after it was discovered the county school system has a $1.8 deficit, and voters failed to pass two operational levies last year.

Following last week's board meeting, it appears the board will make final decisions at a Monday meeting on cuts and placing personnel in other openings.

Leading the training Friday is Joe Panetta, Chief Operations Officer, Finance and Administration, West Virginia Department of Education and Howard M. O'Cull, Ed.D., Executive Director, West Virginia School Board Association.

Among the items for the training and work session:

- Financial Aspects of Boards Responsibilities

- State-Aid Formula

- Three-Year Plan of Reduction

- Strategic Plan

- Three-Year Debt Reduction

- Board Goals

- Central Office Staff Restructuring

- Board Responsibilities/Duties - Personnel

- Chain of Command

- Dealing with Employees of the System

ORIGINAL STORY - Calhoun Superintendent of Schools Tim Woodward said the Calhoun Board of Education unanimously approved his recommended Reduction in Force, terminations and transfers at last week's meeting.

The board met in a nearly four hour session regarding the superintendent's administrative restructuring plan to reduce costs.

Woodward has put forth a $1.1 million dollar plan to reduce a $1.8 million dollar deficit currently facing the Calhoun school system.

"I, as any superintendent, do not want to see anyone not have employment due to financial situations," Woodward said.

He said that the re-organization plan will include new board office positions and job duties, and will be presented to the school board on February 16.

"This plan will reduce board office (professional staff) by 1.5 positions," said Woodward.

During last week's meeting, affected administrators facing reduction or transfer, presented their cases against Woodward's proposal. The Herald requested a copy of Woodward's reorganization plan.

But Woodward referred to actions taken on the board's agenda last week, declining to list the individuals and positions affected.
