WCHS-TV - Some residents in the Reedy area are not drinking the water, even though the town's water plant said it is safe to use.
Barbara Delaney, who lives in the Roane County town, said concerns started with a letter sent with her water bill.
"Well, I was scared to drink the water," Delaney said.
Barbara and others in Reedy have received letters saying the maximum contaminant levels (MCL) for Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic acids, which are byproducts of chlorine, have exceeded public safety standards.
The letter sent out this month goes on to say the levels are slightly past the safety threshold and promises it is safe to drink the water.
City officials are downplaying the problem. Andrew McKenzie, water board member said residents don't need to worry.
"They would have to drink 40-70 gallons a day then it "may" have an effect," McKenzie said.
In excess, the two compounds are known to cause cancer according to the EPA website. McKenzie and other city officials said constant flushing of its system should fix the problem.
The town of Reedy also recently obtained grant funding to repaint and clean the inside of its water tank. |
