Sherry Lynn Starcher Gunn, 59, of Mt. Zion, West Virginia, passed away in the early hours of January 25th, 2015 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Sherry battled this deadly disease with courage and dignity in a valiant struggle to stay with the family and friends she loved so much.
Sherry earned a Board of Regents degree from Glenville State College and worked as a laboratory technician for 40 years. She was a long-time employee of Minnie Hamilton Health Systems.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of William and Phyllis (Jett) Starcher on November 23rd, 1955. She was preceded in death by her beloved father when she was only 16.
Sherry was the heart of our family.
She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Poe Gunn of Mt. Zion; her children, Eric Thompson and Kelley Cain, both of Mt. Zion; her step-daughter Dayna Gunn of Maryland; her mother, Phyllis Hathaway of Grantsville; her sister, Diana Satterfield of Millstone WV; her brother Kim Starcher of Spencer WV; her brother Kevin Starcher of Millstone; her step-sister Denise Bunner of Creston WV; her step-sister Linda Martin of Mt. Zion; her step-brother Mark Stump of Grantsville; and was a proud aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Sherry is also survived by three fine grandsons and the greatest joys of her life - Ryan Little of Millstone; Aaron Russell of Mt. Zion; and Carter Thompson of Mt. Zion.
So many things remind us of her - a line of poetry, the refrain of an old rock n' roll song, the intricate pattern of an heirloom quilt. Sherry will always be alive in the world around us, in the unexpected remembrances we find in the simplest things. But most of all, Sherry will live on in our hearts.
As our wife, our mother, our daughter, our sister, our friend. There was never a kinder soul and we find it hard to believe we will ever meet her equal in her capacity for joy, compassion, and deep love. It's our job now to find a way to go on without her, and to live our lives by her most excellent example. We love you, Sherry. always.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday January 29, 2015 at Mount Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. David Weaver and Rev. Gene Satterfield officiating.
