Guards Tyler Sims and Ethyn Miller conbined for 29 points and Sam Brady absolutely owned the backboards as visiting Calhoun County scored a 49-39 victory over South Harrison Tuesday night.
The Red Devils junior varsity won its first game of the year with a 38-28 come-from-behind victory to get the sweep.
In the varsity game Calhoun led virtually all the way behind the shooting of Sims, who had a game high 19 points, and the board work of Brady, who had 16 rebounds. Miller's free throw shooting in the fourth quarter allowed the Red Devils to pull away at the end.
Calhoun jumped to a 10-6 first quarter advantage and held the lead after that, at times pulling ahead by double figures only to have the Hawks rally to keep it close.
But the Hawks ran out of rallies in the final period as Calhoun enjoyed an 18-12 edge behind the free throw acumen of Miller and Sims.
Miller, who had 10 points, was five for six in the period while Sims was three of four from the free throw line while adding a pair of treys and a deuce to the cause.
Brady and Dylan Heiney added eight each for 5-6 Calhoun while Luke Sheldon and Tyler Gerwig chipped in with two apiece. Lucas Wilson, William Baker and Zack Yanero all played but did not score.
For South Harrison, 0-12, was led by Zak Wentz with 19. He was the only Hawk to score in double figures, Jonathan Whitehair added seven, Logan Peck 5, Jacob Montgomery three and Brook Storer and Dallas Golden two each.
In the junior varsity game Austin Gribble took the ball away from South Harrison and went from coast-to-coast for a bucket that finally put Calhoun ahead 26-25 triggering a 12-3 run the rest of the way.
Ross Vineyard scored 10 to lead the 1-7 Red Devils while Ben Fredrick chipped in with nine and Gribble seven. Dakota Jarvis and David Washington had four each while Case Carter and Sonny Wilson added two each. Caden Hicks, Chris Kirkland, Noah Allen, Jaron Hall and Kaleb Nicholas all played but did not score.
For South Harrison, 0-4, Cam Barnette had nine to lead the way.
Calhoun will go for .500 Thursday night when it entertains Braxton County in a doubleheader rematch. |
