The Calhoun Board of Education has issued a revised policy for public comment regarding the use of school facilities, an issue that caused critical opposition as part of a debt reduction plan last year, particularly with sports groups.
The policy proposes a $30 per hour, three hour minimum charge for use of facilities.
The latest proposed policy appears to give administrative leeway
about the use of gyms and facilities after 5 p.m., with the usage fees eligible for an administrative waiver.
Superintendent Timothy Woodward said,
"The major change (amended policy) is in the fee structure for
in-house activities. There is a waiver form which can be turned into the superintendent for a waiver of fees ... which I consider in order to provide a waiver.
Woodward said closing the facilities at 5 p.m. has saved roughly $2,500 dollars a month.
"I have not heard one complaint from the coaches in any form since we have allowed them to rent the facility for extended use so I would say they are understanding of our situation and are happy to work with us on renting the facility for extended use," Woodward said.
After an operating levy failed twice last year, Woodward announced a $1.1 million plan in December to reduce a $1.8 million deficit.
The policy changes are out for comment for 30 days.
