A Wayne County man says he was acting in self-defense when he shot another man to death in the early-morning hours Tuesday.
John Ferrell currently faces no charges in the killing of Cody Perry, but the investigation is continuing.
Overnight, Ferrell's wife called her husband to say she was worried about a "suspicious" vehicle at the end of the couple's driveway, also calling 911.
Ferrell left work and came home to check it out.
Perry was in the car in the driveway, as was Ashton Akers, who was staying with a relative nearby.
"For whatever reason, they weren't going to the house. I don't believe they were in that driveway for any specific reason that involved the Ferrell family," authorities said.
Perry, who was in his mid-20s, and Akers agreed to leave the driveway area.
After checking on his wife, Ferrell said he was returning to work when he saw the car again, parked in another adjacent roadway.
He said he stopped his truck about 40 feet away from where the car was and waited for a while, then the driver of the car pulled onto the roadway and parked about 15 feet in front of Ferrell's vehicle, nose to nose.
"There was some scuffle, but it was very brief, and Mr. Perry was shot shortly after the scuffle began," said authorities. He said one shot was fired from a .45-caliber gun.
Police don't think Perry had a gun.
Police say they do not have enough information yet regarding the incident.
