HOT SPOTS - Charleston and Huntington are hot-spots for crime in West Virginia for several years, drug distribution centers for Detroit and other crime groups.
Charleston police say there were seven homicides in 2014 after reporting only one the previous year.
The 2014 figure is slightly higher than the 10-year average of five homicides from 2004 to 2013.
There was a peak of 10 in 2010.
Six of the seven cases last year involved drugs, and police made arrests in all of the homicides.
It is important to the public, driven by misconception, that crime is actually down.
KANAWHA HOLD-UP - Lawrence Smith was arrested Sunday morning after investigators say he robbed a Wendy's in Jefferson where he was employed.
A manager said she heard glass breaking. She walked outside the office and saw a man a with a shirt over his face and holding a knife.
Deputies say Smith grabbed the manager by the back on the neck and told her to give him the money. He then followed her into the office while she opened the safe and handed him an undisclosed amount of cash.
Deputies got to the scene and a K-9 unit was able to track the suspect to the apartment building across the street. Smith was arrested at a gas station.
