(01/02/2015)
UPDATE 1/3 - Eric Campbell, 21, of Alvin, Texas, is charged with attempted homicide and malicious assault and his father, Edward Campbell, 54, also of Alvin, Texas, was also shot during the incident with Lewisburg police during a traffic stop. He will be charged when released from hospital.

Charges are pending against the men for the murder of two NC residents whose bodies were found in their vehicle.

The two officers, Lt. Jeromy Dove and Patrolman Nicholas, were shot during the stop for a stolen vehicle, but have been released from the hospital.

Authorities said their wearing of bullet proof vests likely saved them.

UPDATE 1/2 - A news release by West Virginia State Police said two recently deceased bodies were discovered under a mattress in the bed of a red pickup truck.

Granville County, N.C. Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins Jr. confirmed the victims were from Oak Hill, N.C.

Wilkins said Jerome Faulkner, 73, and his wife Dora, 62, were at their home near Oak Hill when two men burst in at about 7 a.m., set their house on fire and took the couple and their sport utility vehicle.

Wilkins said at this point he believes this was a random crime, but an investigation is ongoing.

The release from West Virginia State Police said the incident started at about 4 p.m. when two officers from the Lewisburg Police Department conducted a traffic stop on I-64. The officers stopped the white SUV that had North Carolina tags, which was reported as stolen.

As the officers were conducting the traffic stop, the red Chevrolet truck pulled over. The driver of the truck then pulled out at handgun and shot at the officers, the release said.

The release said both officers were wounded, but one was able to fire back, hitting the shooter in the leg. The driver of the SUV fled the scene.

The shooter drove the truck over a hillside, and was eventually taken into custody by Greenbrier County deputies.

The other suspect eventually turned himself in to law enforcement after he drove behind a guardrail and hid from police for a short time, the release said.

The suspects claim to be father and son, but police have not verified their identities.

Both are arrested for malicious assault and attempted murder of a police officer, the release said.

ORIGINAL STORY: Men who shot Lewisburg police officers had dead bodies in truck

Two men transporting dead bodies believed to be from North Carolina are in custody after shooting two Lewisburg police officers on New Year's Day.

Both suspects were heading west on Interstate 64 in Greenbrier County in separate vehicles when police pulled them over just after 4 p.m. One was driving a red Chevrolet pickup truck with North Carolina license plates. The other was driving a white Chevrolet SUV, also with North Carolina tags.

As the officers approached the vehicles, the driver of the red truck pulled out a handgun and shot them. Both officers were wounded.

"One of the officers was able to respond to the threat with his department issued firearm, resulting in the suspect being wounded in one leg," said West Virginia State Police Lt. Michael Baylous in a news release.

The suspect who shot at the officers went over the hillside and was taken into custody by the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department. The second suspect, in the red pickup, drove behind a guardrail on the interstate and briefly hid before turning himself in to authorities.

The men claim to be father and son, with the father being the shooter, Baylous said. Authorities had not confirmed their identities as of press time Thursday.

During a search of the vehicles, officers found two dead bodies inside the bed of the pickup, hidden underneath a mattress. Officials believe the victims are from North Carolina, and are coordinating with law enforcement there.

Both Lewisburg officers were admitted to the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, where they were treated for their injuries. As of 8:40 p.m. Thursday, a hospital employee said both officers were in good and stable condition.

The hospital also admitted one of the two suspects, who was treated for injuries and transferred to another hospital.

Following the arrests, authorities shut down lanes on Interstate 64 to continue their investigation. As of 8:20 p.m. Thursday eastbound lanes on Interstate 64 were open but westbound lanes remained closed.

Authorities would not release the names of the officers or suspects.
