John Joseph Kemmner, 93 - Spencer

John Joseph Kemmner, 93, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Thursday, December 25, 2014 at Morgantown.

He was born at Spencer on December 24, 1921, a son of the late Alfred Joseph and Minnie Irene Rampp Kemmner. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1940, was married on April 18, 1947, and was a lifelong resident of Spencer and the Roane County area.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Katie Belle (Holswade) Kemmner; a sister, Audra Lucy Fetty; a brother, Chester Alfred Kemmner; and a sister, Catherine Marie "Kitty" Hughes Pursley.

He is survived by his children, Darlene Jo Smith and husband Hunter of Charleston WV and Harry Dale Kemmner and wife Jo Ellen of Lost Creek WV; his grandchildren, Grant Joseph Smith and wife Carrie Lisa Brown, Emily Kay Smith and husband Christopher John Sagedy, Christine Elizabeth Kemmner, and Kaitlyn Grace Kemmner; and by four nieces and three nephews.

During World War II, he worked at Carnegie Steel in South Charleston and later served in the Navy, mostly on the west coast of the United States, training as a tail gunner on an Avenger Torpedo Bomber. After this tour of duty, he worked at Monongahela Power Company for 35 years, retiring as a line foreman in 1982. He later served 29 years as President of the Poca Valley Bank, the longest serving president in its history and was also a member of Moriah Lodge #38 AF & AM.

A memorial service will be held at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014. A private interment will follow at the Spencer Memorial Cemetery. The family will gather with friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
