Roane County, West Virginia - It's never easy for dog lovers to see animals living in horrific conditions. Patti Lawson, an animal activist, author, blogger, and self-professed dog lover said, "If you're silent, you're just adding to the problem."
For Lawson, this kind of thing is her life. Around 20 small dogs were rescued from a home in Roane County Friday evening. Just last month, deputies said another 20 were removed from the same home.
Lawson said, "They were severely neglected by people who I believe just got in way over their heads. They're elderly. My heart goes out to them." Lawson got a tip about the home and called me to go with her to check it out.
The homeowner invited Lawson and her friend inside while I waited across the street. When she came back outside, she says conditions were so bad that she wanted to call 911. "It actually is more sad than anything to see someone at this stage of life in a filthy house, filled with many dogs running around," she said. "Very stale dog food in a dish on the floor, dog feces everywhere."
Roane County deputies, troopers, and a humane officer arrived on scene. The homeowner voluntarily surrendered all of the dogs. Lawson and her friend took one little dog. Lawson said, "Look at the matting on her paw. They haven't had a chance."
For now, the dogs are safe and sound inside of the Roane County Animal Shelter, where they are being seen by a veterinarian and groomed. A fresh, and clean start for what Lawson said are some very lucky dogs.
That homeowner was not charged with any crimes Friday. Deputies said they are discussing any pending charges on Monday. |
