A well-known Wirt County community leader, Philip Ray Shears 72, died Tuesday.
Wirt County Sheriff's Sgt. L.J. Peck said Shears was pronounced dead at Camden Clark Medical Center. Authorities had been called to his residence after his wife discovered him at the bottom of the pool.
"It appeared that he was winterizing the pool. We don't know if it was health-related or just a tragic accident," said Peck.
Shears' body has been sent to the medical examiners office.
Shears was co-owner with his wife of the Mingo Bottom Golf Course at Elizabeth, and was a retired employee of GE Plastics.
He was a graduate of Mountain State Business College.
Family members said, He never met a stranger and would go out of the way to help anyone."
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Elizabeth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lee Williams and Rev. James Bruce
officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 at Matheny Whited Funeral Home
and one hour prior to the service at the church.
