Wager said she enjoyed seeing the customers every day

Tuesday was Ida Wager's last day working for the US Postal System, the postmistress at Big Bend is ending 28 years on-the-job.
"I'll miss seeing the customers, they've been a great bunch," she said.
Wager started her postal career at Creston in 1987, an office that was closed, after which she was transferred to Big Bend.
"There were a few strange packages that arrived and we had to call postal inspectors, but they all turned out o.k."
Wager acknowledged she worked in a country village, "I looked out the window a while back and a pig was streaking down Route 5.
Living in the Creston area, there were times she had difficulty getting to the post office, related to flooding waters from the Little Kanawha.
"I pulled my dress up and waded through the flood water to see the office was opened," she said.
The Big Bend office was first established in 1849 and for a time was named Brooksville. It now serves about 550 customers.

Another long-time postal worker retired at the Big Springs office in September, before we could contact her. Brenda Radabaugh had about 36 years service.
