Honey harvest time is here again. WCBA held their monthly meeting on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Roane County Committee on Aging Center in Spencer.
Several matters of business were discussed, including pending grants, displays and volunteer involvement in the Molasses Festival at Arnoldsburg, as well as the upcoming Walnut Festival in Spencer.
WCBA has, for the last several years, had an informational display in the Black Walnut Festival, as well as raffles to create funds to assist beekeepers get up and running, and help allay some of the costs involved in beekeeping for those members who are already established beekeepers.
At the Walnut Festival display, WCBA provides a teaching beehive, to demonstrate the work that goes on inside the hive, including pictures of a bee from the egg stage, larva, hatching and working, as well as the drone and queen pictures. Those on hand answer questions on honey production, healthful benefits of pollen, honey and other elements of the hive.
At the Molasses Festival, as well as the Black Walnut Festival this year, raffle tickets will be made available for a hand made quilt, as well as a tote bag full of useful gift items.
Please note that the Black Walnut Festival display will be moved to the former Armory building this year.
General consensus is that honey production has been reduced this year due to an over abundance of rain.
WCBA meetings are generally held on the 4th Saturday of each month at 1:00 at the Roane County Senior Center in Spencer. Everyone is welcome.
