Eugene W. Reynolds, 89, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away September 10, 2014 at The Arbors of Marietta, OH.
He was born at Hur, Calhoun County, to Hess and Lizzie Fritz Reynolds. He was an educator and farmer until his retirement.
After graduating from Calhoun County High School, he attended Glenville State Teachers College (as it was called at that time) for one year. At which time he was called to duty and served his country in Europe with the 36th Division of the Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster for having been twice wounded.
After the war he returned to Glenville where he obtained his BA in Elementary and Secondary Education in 1948. While at Glenville he was a member of the Holy Roller Court and Kappa Sigma Kappa Fraternity of which he was a charter member. He then enrolled at West Virginia University and received his Master's in Education.
He began his teaching career as Principal of a two-room school at Cabot Station for two years. He then spent the next seventeen years at Calhoun County High teaching English along with many other duties.
In 1968, he went to Spencer where he served as Assistant Principal at Spencer High School for twenty years. He retired from Education in 1988.
In addition to his educational career, he along with his mother and later his wife, Juanita, operated a 200 acre farm raising purebred Polled Herford cattle. He and his wife were twice selected in 1987 and 1989 as the Farmer of the Year for Calhoun County by the Little Kanawha Soil Conservation District.
In 1991 he and Juanita moved to Parkersburg to be near family and medical facilities. He was a member of the Eureka Lodge #40 where he served as Mater in 1968. He was a member of the Red Hill United Methodist Church where he taught the Senior Bible Class. He was a Lay Leader and member of several organizations within the church. He enjoyed attending Bible Study.
Surviving are his wife Juanita of 32 years; one sister Patty Ridout of PA; one daughter Donna Showen of Parkersburg; one son Scott Carpenter (Angel) of Stockport, OH; grandchildren Eric and Chad Showen, Austin, Alli and Andy Carpenter, Ceara (Josh) Bennett and Shilo Carpenter; one great grandchild, Tristan Showen and several very special friends and loved ones.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law Robert Ridout and son-in-law Rick Showen.
Funeral services will be held Sunday September 14, 2014, 4:00 pm at the Stump Funeral Home in Arnoldsburg with Rev. Mark Watkins and Rev. Mary Zimmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery at Mt. Zion. Friends may call at the funeral from 12:00-4:00 pm Sunday prior to the services.
