UPDATE: CHEMICAL TANK CRASHES ON I-79 - Southbound Closed Between Frametown-Gassaway, Leak Could Spill Into Elk River

UPDATE FRI. 10 AM - The chemical spill did not reach the Elk River.

UPDATE THUR. 10:30 PM - I-79 reopened at 10:30 p.m.

THUR. 4 PM -The southbound lanes of Interstate 79 are shutdown between the Frametown and Gassaway exits Thursday afternoon and evening.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection, a tractor trailer went through the guardrail and over the hill on I-79 near the 52 mile marker, the truck severely damaged.

The driver was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center for treatment, the extent of his injuries unknown.

The Spirit Services truck out of Nitro was carrying up to 4,500 gallons of Condensate which is a chemical used in the oil and gas industry.

Reports say The chemical is flowing towards a tributary of the Elk River and water companies have been notified because there are waters intakes along the Elk River in Clay and Procious.

DEP has a crew on scene along with Spirit Services to determine whether or not the chemical has made it's way into the Elk.
