PUTNAM MAN LIKELY POSITIVE WITH WEST NILE - Three More Regional Counties Have Positive Birds

(09/27/2002)
Three more regional counties have validated the presence of the West Nile Virus. They are Wirt, Gilmer and Ritchie, bringing to 36 the number of counties in which the virus has been found in dead birds.

A 55-year-old Putnam County man has been reported to be the first actual case in West Virginia with the virus, although actual confirmation still has some additional steps. More than 2,100 cases have been reported in the country.

The man has reportedly recovered from the virus, which first appeared in August.

The disease is spread by mosquito bites.
