Elsbeth "Betty" Dietz, 84, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, in the Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after an extended illness.
She was born January 9, 1930 in Kassel, Germany, the daughter of the late Friedrich and Martha Schmoll Winter. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dietz, who died in 2007.
Mrs. Dietz was the retired co-owner and co-operator, with her late husband, of Dietz Realty. She was an avid flower gardener and a longtime member of the Hill and Hollow Garden Club, Spencer. She was awarded a lifetime membership in the West Virginia Garden Club.
Together with her husband and three year old son, she immigrated to the United States in May 1957, arriving in New Jersey. She and her family became citizens Jan. 8, 1965. They moved to Liverpool, WV, in 1971 and Spencer in 1998.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed time with her children and granddaughter, flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, cooking family dinners, caring for pets and farm animals.
Survivors include a son, Ray Dietz of Spencer; a daughter, Barbara Smith of Spencer; a granddaughter, Kendra Smith of Spencer; a brother, Gunther Winter of Germany; two sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Garry L. Bowen officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
