After a small break from months of preparing for, and winning, the state's National History Day competition, the team went back to work heading to Charleston to meet with Joan Browning, the subject of their project.

Ms. Browning, a Freedom Rider during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s was speaking at West Virginia State University Friday and agreed to meet with the students Saturday in Charleston.

Students and coach traveled to Charleston and spent Saturday morning interviewing, and having a pleasant conversation with Ms. Browning. Students also performed the winning performance called "Freedom Riders: The Joan Browning Story." Ms. Brown wiped away tears as the girls performed.

After spending the morning with Ms. Browning, and a quick lunch, the students then headed to the West Virginia Archives to spend the afternoon researching the Civil Rights Movement in West Virginia.

Students also visited the state's museum and focused on the African American experience from slavery to modern times.
