Pleasant Hill Elementary student Mason Siwicki (left) earned a 2nd place finish with his world history project, "The Evolution of LEGO," at the state's social studies fair on Friday, April 11.
Students are judged on three components of their project. They include the abstract, oral presentation, and display. The abstract is the written portion, where students list the essential questions they intend to investigate, the methodology of how they conducted their research, and an overall summary and conclusion, as well as a detailed bibliography of the research.
The oral presentation is a speech that describes and explains the project. This includes questioning from the judges, where they can ascertain the student's true knowledge of the subject, and is the key part of the project. The display is a physical representation detailing the project; it includes artifacts, written descriptions, pictures, graphs, and any other information that explains the project.
Siwicki, who had to win first place at his school, the county, and regional levels to make it to the state, received perfect scores on his oral presentation and display in Charleston. Some minor deductions on the abstract bumped him to 2nd place. This is the highest score a Calhoun student has received at the state social studies fair in at least 15 years.
As an elementary school student, we look forward to many years of his exploration and accomplishments in the social sciences.
