(05/05/2014)
Brandi Richards' civics classes are collecting plastic grocery bags to break the Guinness World Record for the Most Grocery Bags in a sculpture.

Richards said "Guinness has given us the go ahead for trying to break the record."

"We are at 45,000 bags! If you are attending the Red Devil Revue this weekend please bring your bags. We will have a collection area set up near the entrance," said Richards.

Please keep the bags coming! You can drop them off at Calhoun Middle-High School office or Pleasant Hill Elementary or send them to school with a student during regular school hours through May 7th.

The bags will be recycled once the record is broken.

Some facts about how grocery bags impact our planet:

In 1974 the first single use plastic bags were introduced to stores and presently over One Trillion bags are used each year.

If you placed one year's worth of plastic bags end to end, they would go around the Earth almost 36,000 times.

A family of four uses approximately 1,500 single use plastic bags each year.

Worse yet, plastic is filling the world's oceans, killing sea life.
