GOV. TOMBLIN SIGNS NRA GUN CARRY EXPANSION BILL - Charleston Mayor Livid

(03/26/2014)
A National Rifle Association sponsored bill widely passed by the WV Legislature has been signed into law by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

The bill passed using a "uniformity" concept for gun rights, and lets people with concealed-carry permits to bring guns to city-owned recreational facilities, including swimming pools and after-school centers, directly affecting Charleston.

While the law requires people to store guns securely out of view and access to others, carriers still can bring concealed weapons to sports venues and places that cater to children, including after-school programs.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones has called the proposal "disgraceful" and that it would threaten the safety of children.

UPDATE STORY - A YouTube parody comparing Charleston Mayor Danny Jones as Hitler posted by a Morgantown resident Kevin Patrick, Jr., a member of pro-gun group, the West Virginia Citizens Defense League, displayed Jones' reaction to the WV Legislature usurping Charleston's control over facilities where guns can be carried.

Jones made his feelings clear on last Sunday's edition of Decision Makers, a WV TV show, the mayor passionately railing against the bill that would allow people to bring guns onto city property where children are present.

"It's really easy to make the comparison between the two. I think Danny Jones doesn't handle himself very well in some ways," said Patrick.

The creator said he supports the freedom of speech, and he has a message for those who misinterpreted the satire: "I would say they must be new to the Internet," Patrick said. "The Internet is a rough and tumble Wild West kind of place."

ORIGINAL STORY - Charleston Mayor Danny Jones is livid over the passage of legislation backed by the NRA that expands the carry of weapons into areas that guns have long been banned.

Jones called the bill "disgraceful," which does away with the Charleston's gun carrying restrictions.

Jones, who is a second amendment supporter, said such actions are overkill, politicians scared of the NRA.

The West Virginia legislature overwhelming approved a new gun bill that lets people with concealed-carry permits bring guns to city-owned recreational facilities, including swimming pools and after-school centers.

Legislators said the bill will negate local gun laws in the Mountain State and create uniformity.

The new law goes to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

It requires people to store guns out of view and access to others, but allows owners to bring guns to sports venues and places that cater to children, including after-school programs.

Mayor Jones said it would threaten the safety of children, including hundreds who attend programs like Head Start daily in a Charleston city building.

Last year, following the Sandy Hook school massacre, legislators introduced more than 30 bills to expand gun rights and ownership.
