Wal-Mart is West Virginia's largest private employer, five years running, with 10,500
workers at 31 sites.
By and large, government or taxpayer supported concerns is the largest employer,
with county Boards of Education being the largest in over 30 counties.
The second largest employer in the state is WVU/United Hospitals with 4,800 workers.
The third is Charleston Area Medical Center.
Light and heavy industrial jobs have been leaving the state for several years, mostly
moving to foreign countries under GATT or NAFTA. About 5000 such jobs have left the
state recently.
