Ronnie Barker Peters, age 76, of Derwood, MD passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Brooke Grove Rehabilitation Facility after an extended illness.
He is survived by his devoted wife Margaret, a daughter Lisa Wade and husband Dane of Waynesboro, VA and a son Tom and wife Sarah of Damascus, MD. Also surviving are one brother, Carl and wife Myrna of Silver Spring MD; four grandchildren, Meghan Sevier and husband Steve, Emily Bell, Abigail Peters and Mitchell Peters; two great grandchildren, Mia and Calvin Sevier.
Born October 13, 1937, Ronnie was the son of the late Alton Peters and Evelyn (Barker) Peters, and lived his entire childhood in Sand Fork, WV. He was a graduate of Sand Fork High School ('55) and Glenville State College ('59). Ronnie played football, baseball, and basketball at Glenville State, and was a proud member of the 1958 undefeated GSC football team.
In 1959 he began his teaching career in Montgomery County, MD and taught physical education for 33 years before retiring in 1992. Ronnie spent 30 years at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, MD, where he coached football and basketball at both the JV and Varsity level. He finished his career as Department Chair for the Physical Education Program. During his 33 year career in education, he was greatly respected and dearly loved by his co-workers, student and players.
In 1962 Ronnie also entered the US Army for a brief period of active duty and continued serving in the Reserves Military, Police Division for seven years. He was a very strong Christian, and served as a charter member of Redland Baptist Church in Derwood, MD. Ronnie was a loving a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.
There will be a viewing at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. in Glenville on Saturday, February 22nd from 11am-1pm, with funeral service at the funeral home at 1pm. Burial will be at Sand Fork Cemetery following the service.
