Darris Edward Atkinson, 85, of Spencer, West Virginia died January 13, 2014 at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division.
Darris was born November 24, 1928 in Reedy, West Virginia a son of the late Ralph G. and Gladys Ashley Atkinson. He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum and enjoyed woodworking, farming, camping and fishing. He was a member of the Clarence Community Church and attended the Faith Baptist Church. Darris was a US Army veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia Butler Atkinson; four daughters, Diane (David) Kyer of Spencer, Darlene Atkinson of Ripley, West Virginia, Gloria Kay (Paul) Vannoy of Reedy, and Linda Luthy of St. Albans, West Virginia; two sons, Eddie (Michelle) Atkinson of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and David Michael (Teonna) Atkinson of Ravenswood, West Virginia; three sisters, Betty Boggs of Charlotte, North Carolina, Doris Jean Cline of Spencer, and Sharon Wine of Reedy; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Delmar Atkinson.
Service 1:00 p.m. Friday. January 17, 2014 at the TAYLOR-VANDALE FUNERAL HOME, Spencer, with Rev. Wayne McGlothlin officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 6:00 to 8:00pm Thursday at the funeral home. Local Roane County veterans will be conducting the military portions of the service at the funeral home and cemetery.
